Abstract

Human activities generate environmental impacts that have led to the creation of legal frameworks to reduce negative effects on the natural environment and society. An important activity carried out in rural areas of Brazil is tourism, which has recorded growth since it was classified as such in 1986. This activity, therefore, is one that must follow standards to ensure that impacts are minimized. Studies conducted in the municipality of Nova Friburgo, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, in hotels and rural properties showed actions aimed at ensuring the sustainability of their activities. These actions include the use of water for multiple purposes, the treatment of wastewater and its reuse, environmental education, and in the area of self-generation of electrical energy. Further studies focused on the use of firewood by these properties are recommended. The results show that there is indeed an interest on the part of the owners in maintaining environmental quality and preserving environmental resources and services.
